About klondike

Klondike is the classic solitaire card game, the one most people just call solitaire. Seven columns are dealt with only the last card in each face up, and the rest wait in the stock. You build each suit home from ace to king, turning up hidden cards as you go.

How to play Klondike

A face-up card can move onto a card one higher in the other colour, like a red 6 onto a black 7, and the cards on top of it come too. Only a king can go into an empty column. When a face-down card is uncovered, it turns up by itself.

Tap the stock to turn over the next card. When the stock runs out, the waste turns over to make it again, as often as you like. Each suit goes home in order, from the ace up to the king. There’s no limit on Undo.

A deal you can always win

In classic solitaire, many deals can’t be won however well you play. Owlpuzzles checks every Klondike deal first, so each one you get has a way home.

A new Klondike deal every day

Owlpuzzles has a new Klondike deal every day at midnight in your time zone, and it gets harder through the week. Early in the week you turn over one card at a time. Friday to Sunday you turn over three.

When one a day isn’t enough, there are 300+ Klondike levels from easy to hard, and unlimited Klondike for as many games as you like.

Klondike tips

Turn up the hidden cards first

A face-down card can be anything you need. Moves that uncover one are usually worth more than moves from the stock.

Hold back the empty column

An empty column only takes a king. Clear one when you have a king ready to move into it.

Don’t rush cards home

A card that goes home can’t hold anything any more. Keep a low card out while you still need it to move a run.

Questions about Klondike

Is Klondike free?

Yes. It plays in your browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to download and no sign-up. A free account only keeps your streak and stats on every device.

Can every game of Klondike be won?

No. Many deals can’t be won, even playing perfectly. On Owlpuzzles every deal can, because each one is checked before you get it.

What’s the difference between Klondike and solitaire?

Klondike is the game most people mean by solitaire. Solitaire is the name for any card game you play alone, and FreeCell and spider are kinds of it too.

What’s the difference between draw one and draw three?

Draw one turns over a single card from the stock each time. Draw three turns over three, and you can only play the top one, so it’s harder.

Is this the same solitaire that came with Windows?

The rules are the same. Owlpuzzles adds a new deal every day, levels and unlimited play.

What does par mean?

Par is a good number of moves for that deal, counting each draw. It’s something to aim for, and a sharp game can beat it.

Can I play Klondike on my phone?

Yes. Owlpuzzles is made for phones, and you can tap or drag your cards.
