About freecell

FreeCell is a solitaire card game where every card is dealt face up. You build each suit home from ace to king, with four free cells to hold cards while you dig. Nothing is hidden, so a game comes down to planning instead of luck. You'll also see it written as free cell.

How to play FreeCell

The last card in a column can move onto a card one higher in the other colour, like a red 6 onto a black 7. A free cell holds any one card, and any card can go in an empty column. Each suit goes home in order, from the ace up to the king.

Cards in order can move together if you have the free space to carry them. Tap a card and then where it goes, or drag it there. There’s no limit on Undo. For more, read how to play FreeCell and win.

A deal you can always win

In classic solitaire, some deals can’t be won however well you play. Owlpuzzles checks every FreeCell deal first, so each one you get has a way home.

A new FreeCell deal every day

Owlpuzzles has a new FreeCell deal every day at midnight in your time zone, and it gets harder through the week. Early in the week there’s room for a wrong turn. Friday to Sunday you get three free cells instead of four.

When one a day isn’t enough, there are 300+ FreeCell levels from easy to hard, and unlimited FreeCell for as many games as you like.

FreeCell tips

Find the aces first

Before your first move, look for the aces and twos. The cards on top of them are the ones you need to shift.

Keep your free cells open

A full set of free cells is how most games get stuck. Use one when it gets you somewhere, and empty it again soon.

Clear a column

An empty column is worth more than a free cell: it holds a whole run of cards, and it doubles how many you can move at once.

Questions about FreeCell

Is FreeCell free?

Yes. It plays in your browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to download and no sign-up. A free account only keeps your streak and stats on every device.

Can every game of FreeCell be won?

Almost every deal can be won, and on Owlpuzzles every deal can. Each one is checked before you get it.

What’s the difference between FreeCell and solitaire?

FreeCell is a kind of solitaire. In classic solitaire most cards start face down, and in FreeCell every card is face up from the first move.

How many cards can you move at once in FreeCell?

One more than your empty free cells, doubled for each empty column. With four empty cells you can move five cards together.

Is this the same FreeCell that came with Windows?

The rules are the same. Owlpuzzles adds a new deal every day, levels and unlimited play.

What does par mean?

Par is a good number of moves for that deal. It’s something to aim for, and a sharp game can beat it.

Can I play FreeCell on my phone?

Yes. Owlpuzzles is made for phones, and you can tap or drag your cards.
