About block puzzle

A block puzzle is a game where you place pieces made of squares on a grid. Fill a whole row or column and it clears, which makes room for more. You get three pieces at a time, and the game ends when none of them fit. There's no last level: you play for a higher score.

How to play block puzzle

You get three pieces at a time. Drag them onto the grid in any order you like, and once all three are down, three new ones come. When a row or a column is full, it clears and the space opens up again.

The fifth row has one gap. The upright piece drops into it, the row is full, and it clears.

Pieces can’t overlap or hang off the edge. The game ends when none of the pieces you’re holding fits anywhere on the board. There are no lives and no waiting, so you can start a new game straight away.

Tips for a higher score

Keep the board open

Every clear gives you room back. Big setups are fine while the board is empty, but once it starts to fill up, clear whatever line you can.

Leave room for the big pieces

The 3×3 square and the five-long lines are the pieces that end games. Before each move, check there’s still a 3×3 space somewhere and a gap of five in at least one row or column.

Clear the middle first

A half-full row across the middle splits the open space in two, and then the big pieces fit in neither half. Finish lines through the middle first, and stack pieces along the edges and in the corners, where they don’t cut the board up.

Don’t leave one-cell holes

This hole is boxed in on every side. Only a one-square piece fits there, and the bottom row can't clear without it.

A single empty cell with blocks all round it is hard to fill, and it holds up its row and its column. Leave gaps at least two cells wide, or fill them straight away.

Keep a combo going

Clears on back-to-back moves make a combo, which scores extra. Keep one line close to full so you have a clear ready for the next move, and try to finish two lines with one piece.

How scoring works

Every piece you place earns points. Clearing a line earns much more, and clearing two or more lines with one piece earns more again. Clears on back-to-back moves add a combo bonus on top. Empty the whole board and you get a Clean sweep bonus.

So the big scores come from clears, most of all from several at once.

Board sizes and the daily game

Endless mode comes in three board sizes, and each one keeps its own best score:

  • 6×6: quick games, where every move is tight.
  • 8×8: the classic size.
  • 10×10: long games, with more room to plan.

Daily is an 8×8 game where everyone gets the same pieces today. When your game ends, your score goes into today’s ranking and you see your place among today’s players. Every score is checked on the server before it counts, so the ranking only has games that were really played.

A twist for every day of the week

The daily changes its rule each day, easy on Monday and harder towards Sunday:

  • Monday: classic, no twist.
  • Tuesday: gems. Clear a line with a gem in it for 50 bonus points.
  • Wednesday: hold. Keep one piece aside for later.
  • Thursday: stones on the board from the start.
  • Friday: big pieces, and no single blocks.
  • Saturday: ice, which takes two clears to break.
  • Sunday: stones and ice together.

Everyone plays the same rule on the same day, so the ranking stays fair.

Where block puzzles come from

Block puzzles borrow the line clear from Tetris, which Alexey Pajitnov made in 1984. The difference is that nothing falls: you put each piece where you want it, in your own time. The format took off on phones in the mid-2010s, and app stores are still full of versions of it.

Most of those are apps with ads. On Owlpuzzles it plays in the browser, free.

Questions about block puzzle

Can I play block puzzle online for free?

Yes. Block puzzle on Owlpuzzles is free and plays in your browser on a phone or a computer. There’s nothing to download and no account to make.

What’s the best strategy for block puzzle?

Keep the board open, and always leave space for the 3×3 square and the five-long lines. Clear lines through the middle first, and don’t leave single empty cells boxed in.

How do you win a block puzzle game?

There’s no finish line. The game goes on until none of your pieces fit, so you play to beat your best score, the same as in games like Block Blast. Clearing several lines at once, and on back-to-back moves, is how the big scores happen.

What happens when no piece fits?

The game is over. If your score beats your best on that board size, it becomes your new best, and you can start again straight away.

Is there a daily block puzzle?

Yes. Daily is an 8×8 game with the same pieces for everyone today, and a different twist each day of the week. When it ends, you see your place among today’s players.

Is there a cheat code for block puzzle?

No. Your score only comes from the pieces you place and the lines you clear, and Daily scores are checked on the server before they go into the ranking.
